A Message From Chris Griswold
Updated
On: Oct 02, 2008 (10:40:00)
The following is an excerpt from the most recent Joint Council 42 newspaper... "As the general election approaches, it is extremely important to take action now and register to vote before the general election – there are only a few weeks left. This election is vital to the stability and growth of labor unions and the American worker. The members and shop stewards need to help Barack Obama get elected by volunteering for phone banking, making house calls and precinct walking. Barack Obama is the only candidate that has pledged his support for workers by fighting the company outsourcing of good jobs to other countries. He also supports the Employee Free Choice Act which would make it easier for workers to join a union and create better jobs. Contact your business representative or Local Union to register to vote or volunteer to help get other labor friendly candidates elected to office. This Local Union continues to grow through organizing new workers. Such as United Airlines, Actors Equity and Sugar Transport. Please contact Don Thornsburg at our organizing office at (626) 350-9860, extension 132 if you have any organizing leads of workers that want to become members of this great union. On a sad note, a great friend of ours passed away recently. Stephen Dilag, age 47, was a Shop Steward at DHL and a volunteer organizer for this Local Union. He also studied labor courses at Los Angeles Trade Tech so that he could learn more about the labor movement to help his members and other workers. Stephen is survived by his wife Bing and two children, Korylen and Stephen, Jr. The last request that Stephen had for his wife was to be buried with “Thunder and Lightning” which are the names of the horses on the Teamster emblem. Stephen Dilag, a real Teamster and a true friend. "

Updated
On: Aug 07, 2008 (13:05:00)
Yasmin Woodruff recently graduated from Saint Mary’s Academy with a perfect 4.0 GPA. John Woodruff is the proud father who is a Local 986 avionics technician at Continental Airlines. She garnered varsity letters in track & field and cross country and will study engineering at either UCLA or Cal this fall. She is most proud of being a “good role model for her siblings.” Yasmin is the recipient of this year's Joint Council 42 Scholarship given to a college bound high school student who is a dependant one of our Teamster members. She is just one of the 24 winners of this year's scholarship. If you have a child who would like to receive a scholarship to help with their college goals....look for various scholarship announcements in the International Magazine, Joint Council 42 newspaper, or the Local 986 Reporter throughout the year.
